Be Good for Goodness’ Sake

A December 7, 1999, article in the Semanario, the organ for the Catholic Church in Guadalajara, Mexico, referred to Santa Claus “as a fat clown, with the chapped cheeks of a heavy beer drinker, the big stomach of a bon vivant, the nose of a drunk” and the “boots of a gendarme.” The article argued that Saint Nicholas, from whom Santa Claus evolved, was a generous man of wealth who practiced anonymous acts of charity and later became a miracle-working bishop in Myra (in modern-day Turkey) and the protector of orphans, widows, and sailors. “What happened to the bishop?” the article entitled “Santa Claus, the Usurper,” asked. “What happened to his miter …his sacred vestments and his consecrated hands blessing the devoted?” It continued by stating that Santa Claus has “usurped the name and the personality of Saint Nicholas. Let’s not permit him to usurp the place of Christ.”
